Rapid Plastic Part Design and Manufacturing

pioneer_plastics_machinesModern technological advances have made it possible for manufacturers to design and make plastic parts quickly and efficiently. Today, the route from an initial concept to a finished product has been significantly expedited with the help of computers and 3D printers. At Pioneer Plastics, we have the equipment and tools to create certain simple parts in as little as 5 weeks.

The process involves careful planning and regular discussions with the customer to ensure a high-level of satisfaction with the end product. The process begins when the customer provides us with initial design concepts. These concepts don’t have to be perfect. Often, they come to us in the form of sketches, pictures, and hand-crafted models. These rough examples not only help us get a better understanding of the customer’s expectations and requirements, but also allow us to formulate our own ideas in terms of materials and functionality.

After an initial discussion with our customer, we move on to the next step, which is to create a full CAD design. We make the design in 3D, and also provide PDF renderings for the customer to review, modify and approve. This is a crucial step in the design process and may sometimes require several exchanges in order to have a model that looks and works exactly the way the customer desires.

When the design is approved, we begin the rapid prototyping process to build a functional part using CAD data. One way to build an effective prototype is to use a 3D printer. A 3D printer creates a three-dimensional solid object from a digital model, and allows us to see and feel the end product in advance. At this point in the manufacturing process, the customer can provide further feedback on the design of the piece before we move forward.

We next use the same CAD data to build the injection mold for the approved part. Days after the injection mold is built, we deliver molded parts to the customer for review. At this point, the customer has the opportunity to evaluate how well the materials suit the product. Upon customer approval, we commence production molding.

The design and manufacturing process ends when production is completed. For simple parts, the process can be expedited to only 5 weeks. Normally, however, it takes between 10 to 15 weeks for us to complete a project.
